False Trevally also known as Parava in Malayalam. It is primarily found in coastal waters, occurring in marine and brackish waters at depths from 15 to 100 m. It is an important fish for local commercial fisheries. It has a medium texture with a medium to high fat content. The flavor is very mild, though slightly fishy. As the bones are easy to remove, false trevally is an excellent choice for children.
Best ways to cook are to bake, grill, smoke and deep or shallow fry. It is a fleshy fish but beware of the pin bones in the muscle.
Health benefits: An excellent source of Vitamin D, B3, B6 and B12, this fish is very beneficial for cardiovascular health (heart) in particular. Niacin or Vitamin B3 is known for boosting good cholesterol (HDL) and reducing triglycerides.
